Where did the time go? THREE weeks and counting left in the school year. Unbelievable!

All assignments given to me by Wednesday morning (updated 5/11) have been graded and posted to OptionC. Check optionc.com to see your status. I am working feverishly to get assignments graded and posted now within 24 hours. Let's get those assignments turned in and finish the year strong!

The last Computer class will be Friday, May 13. ALL ASSIGNMENTS/WORK MUST BE COMPLETED AND TURNED IN BY THIS DAY.

I will not be giving any more homework assignments this year. Students who are behind should get caught up as quickly as possible. Remember, I dock 10% of your grade for being one week late and 20% of your grade for being TWO weeks late. After two weeks, late I will not accept any assignments unless you were absent, in which case you get an extra week. Also, I will still have open lab during lunch recess on the first two Wednesdays and Thursdays in May so students with limited access to the computers can get caught up.

The eighth graders will be taking their Computer Knowledge exam this week. Group 8K1 will take it on Tuesday, group 8K2 will take it on Friday. This is one of six parts of the Central Catholic H.S. exam. Those planning to attend CCHS in the Fall will need to schedule a time with me to take the remaining 5 sections. These are brief (10-15 minutes each) covering word processing, spreadsheets, keyboarding and graphics (drawing). By passing this test students will be able to take more advanced computer-related classes at CCHS. I am confident our students will perform well on this test.

Well, things got a bit jumbled because I had to spend a few days at home with sick kids, plus being sick myself. We're better now and I returned to school on Wednesday. So here's the scoop...

No new homework this week. As of this writing I know I won't be seeing grades 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 this week. I'm not sure about fifth yet. Either way, I'm not assigning any new homework this week.
This FRIDAY, Mar. 11 is the end Quarter 3. Be sure to check OptionC.com daily and get any missing work turned in by FRIDAY in order for it to count for Quarter 3. (Three quarters down, 1 left. Where the the time go?)

As of this writing (Wednesday at 10 AM), I have posted everything that had been turned in on Thursday at 3PM (the last time I was at school). There were quite a few papers in my box this morning and I will work very hard to get everything up to date before I head home today. Your patience is appreciated.

Week of Feb. 28 - Mar. 4

This is an exciting week for me. The Parent Club has provided us with enough money to purchase new computers for all the classrooms. It is very rare that we have to opportunity to provide the same level of technology to all the classrooms at once. What a blessing! The teachers have previously been getting new computers in piecemeal fashion, as fundraising dollars allowed us to replace older (or dead) models with new ones. For many of of our teachers, these new computers are loooooong overdue.

I will be installing these new computers this week, so all Computer classes this week are cancelled to give me enough time to set up the new computers in the classrooms. The computers are brand new 21" iMac computers, complete with webcams, DVD drives, camera card readers and the latest Microsoft Office. And because they are Macs, they won't be getting any nasty viruses. YES!!!

Thank you, Parent Club! You are helping us to provide the the technology tools of today to the leaders of tomorrow.

With next week being Catholic Schools Week, which is busy with many activities, I am assigning no new homework this week. As a whole, we are doing better with missing assignments, however we still have many students who need to get caught up with both classwook and homework. Please take this opportunity to check your grade on optionc.com and get yourself up to date before next week's events.

Remember, I dock your assignment grade 10% if it is one week late, 20% if it is two weeks late. You will get no credit for submitting work more than 2 weeks late, but some teachers require that EVERY assignment given this year be completed in order to go on the field trip. So, turning in an assignment more that two weeks late will not help your Computer grade but will keep you on the field trip.

Before the break, many of you contributed to our Advent Slideshow project by sending me pictures of your advent wreaths and nativity scenes. OLM School contributed TWO slideshows to the project. This week's homework will be to view the slideshows posted by OLM and other schools and reflect on them. Here's what to do...

First, go to Mrs. Poole's blog and read the interesting post she made about the origins of the nativity scene. Her blog post is here. (Please note that her contest is over.) She has some very interesting information there.

Advent Slideshow Part 1

We have been collecting personal pictures of advent wreaths and nativity scenes. We have had such a wonderful response to the project that we will be posting not one, but TWO slideshows on the project's wiki page. She is collecting pictures of advent wreaths and nativity scenes from as many schools as she can on her wiki. (A wiki is a webpage to which others can add content, in this case pictures). What a wonderful way to prepare for the coming of our Savior. To participate in this project, please send me your picture(s) via email at georgesomers@olmlancers.com by Monday, Dec. 13. I'll put them in a slide show and add them to the wiki. Plus, I'll give you 10 points extra credit for submitting your picture. Check the wiki later to see all the pictures submitted.

Progress Reports will go out this Friday and I still have a number of students who have missing work, mostly homework. Last week I sent out Missing Work reports to all students who had not turned in some or all of their work. However, this report did not include the "Thanksgiving" assignment which was due last Wednesday. Those students who do not return this report signed by a parent or guardian by Wednesday (11/17) will have to serve a detention after school. I have never had to do this before but, with the large numbers of students not completing their work, I felt it was necessary for the first time in my 10-years at OLM. All missing work and the signed Missing Work report are due by Wednesday. Also, note that any work given to me this week will not be posted in time for the printing of the progress reports this week but will be posted to Option.com.

Homework:
No new homework is assigned this week. Just get any missing work in to Mr. Somers as soon as possible. Thanks!

Week of Nov. 8-12

We have had a larger than normal number of students with missing homework. Homework is worth approximately 1/3rd of your grade so not doing your homework will definitely affect your grade negatively. Check Optionc.com for your correct grade status. Get those assignments turned in. If I don't get them, I can't GRADE them.

While I am not giving any new homework this week, I am sending home a print out of missing work with each student who haven't turned in those assignments. If you get one of these, you must get it signed by a parent and turned in by Wed., Nov. 17. Those who do NOT turn this in will be given detentions. Plus, you need to get all missing work turned in by Wed., Nov 17 also.

PLEASE STAY ON TOP OF YOUR HOMEWORK! Don't forget about open lab days, Wednesdays and Thursdays at lunch recess. This is a great time to get caught up on missing work.

Next week is ITBS Testing so I am assigning a minimal amount of homework. I do not expect to see grades six and eight next week. Students are doing a practice keyboarding chart test this week. Those who don't get 100% on the practice test will take it again at our next class, which is next week for grades 5 and 7 and the following week for grades 6 and 8. Study if you need to.

All classes are still refocusing on keyboarding skills. I look for 3 main things when they are typing:

Using the home row keys
Using the correct keyboard fingerings
Not looking down at the keyboard while typing

These are the ways that students can learn accurate typing skills. Speed will increase once they learn to be accurate slowly. Parents, please watch for these methods anytime your kids type on the computer.

I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend in honor of the working men and women (like your parents) who make this country great!

For the next couple of weeks, grades 5 through 8 will be reviewing keyboarding skills and the order of the letters on the keyboard. This week, I will give them all a completed keyboard chart and a blank one to practice with. Next week, we'll have a practice test consisting of filling in the letters of a blank chart. In two weeks, we'll have the real test. If they get a perfect score on the practice, of course, they won't need to take the second test.

This is the first week of computers. It's good to be back in the swing of things after a busy 2 weeks of administrative responsibilities.

All K-8 students will be receiving an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) form in the family envelopes this week. Please return them as soon as possible. They seek permission for your child to access the Internet and online resources and outline acceptable uses of those resources. In addition, it explains the consequences of using these resources inappropriately.

Congratulations to Mrs. Keeler's, Ms. Pedrozo, and Mrs. Elam's class. They will be getting a class pizza party (TBA).

Thanks for all the donations. Not only does this program help the environment but it helps us greatly in raising funds for necessary technology.
